First Family Photo Session | Tamara Gonzalez Photography

For the first fall day here in Atlanta, this family asked me to do their very first family portrait. I just can’t get over how much I loved meeting and capturing them. You can just feel the warmth and happiness from these three, and their little man is such a darling. One of my jobs after taking a family’s pictures is to go through hundreds of images, in this case almost 700 because I was so snap happy 🙂 and narrow it down to the best. Oh this was SO hard for this session! Each image was just gorgeous (I mean look at this family) and really felt like you can feel that connection in each image. I love the experience of family sessions. The biggest difference between a full family session like this and mini sessions is having more of that quality time to connect, especially with little ones who simply need more time to get to know me, the person with the camera 🙂 and to get comfortable with their surroundings. The main reason I hear families lean toward mini sessions is they think their little ones can’t handle 45 minutes to an hour. And I totally understand, after all I have two kids myself! But having more time for a customized session really makes a difference. I hope you enjoy this session. Thank you so much for having me capture your family! I can’t wait to share all your images with you!

Outdoor Family Session | Atlanta Family Photographer

I met this family at Whittier Mill Park on the west side of Atlanta. I love this park at sunset! It has such spirit and history and such variety of backdrops for portraits. It had been a while since I had the opportunity to photograph a family with older kids. It was so nice and fun. I kept picturing (and hope) that my kids would end up like these boys – happy, respectful and fun-loving. The grandparents spent a few minutes with us at the beginning too and we just had such nice conversations. Each time I photograph a family, I get a glimpse into their lives, and my job is to interpret that relationship and connection and translate that into images that they can look back on and say, “Yes! That’s us!” That’s my goal. While editing this session I literally had a smile on my face the entire time. Looking at this all family together just makes me happy. Here’s a snapshot of their session below. For those of us that still have little ones, they do grow up and it’s kinda cool.

The Moeller Family | Atlanta Family Photographer

I first met their precious baby girl during the fine art school sessions last spring and she stole the show! She truly embraces life with enthusiasm that just shines. When mom reached out to me to schedule a series of shoots I was thrilled. We booked a family plan and this is the first in that series. We did this shoot first thing in the morning at a park near both of us and it was just perfect. Mom wanted a giant pink balloon in celebration of little Madeline’s upcoming first birthday that is simply adorable. They also brought along their beautiful dog that just made the family portrait complete.

These were shot using my 70-200mm and 35mm. I am finding I love mixing a combination of long and short focal lengths shot wide open. I leave some time during each session to explore different techniques – this keeps each session fresh and creative.

Thank you so much for having me capture this moment. I hope you enjoy these images – I know I am oversharing but I just could not narrow it down!

Tastes of Summer | Atlanta Child Photographer

This summer this kids entertained a project that resulted in an award winning image. I’ve had in mind for some time – capturing them eating their favorite summer foods. We had so much fun! Each time we grilled, made homemade popsicles, or sliced watermelon, we did a little mini session with a sampling of the food.

I simply set up a mini studio session set in our garage to take advantage of the awesome natural light that garages create: I used a ladder to hold up a large piece of black foam core and had them sit down on a crate. I shot this using my 50mm/1.2 wide open and finished in post processing. Super easy, and super fun for them because I involved them in the set up. For those that know me, I often involve the kids in the portrait process – they love it! If I’m photographing my own kids, I have one stand behind me, or hold a prop. (In another post I’ll share how my son sprinkled flower petals on my daughter one evening, oh my!) When I’ve done fine art school studio session portraits, the kids will end up dancing behind me while I’m photographing one child – sometimes younger siblings even sit in my lap while I shoot! The point is I like to have fun, I want my subjects to have fun and I want to capture that moment. These are kids at the realest (is that a word? 😉 Authentic childhood portraits. Fun.

The biggest wow result of this session was that one of the images was selected as the First Place Winner for Color at the National Association of Professional Child Photographers (NAPCP) Inspired Gallery Event. This is such an honor to be among so many talented artists.

And so with the kids now off to school and I attempt to get organized for the slew of family portrait sessions coming up this fall, I want to pay tribute to the fun summer we had this year.
